As the festive feasting gets underway, learn what food is considered lucky during CNY.

Melon seeds, or gua zi in Mandarin, imply not only "many sons" but also "multiple coins". When pronounced in Cantonese, also gua zi, it means “to be in constant thought of someone." These days it comes in flavours like plum, spice and cream, which are added during the stir-frying process.

Bottle gourd, or “hu lu”, sounds like “fu lu”, which means good fortune and prosperity.

You zi (pomelo) symbolises abundance as its Chinese name sounds like the word for "to have". There are two types: the red flesh that is sweeter but more expensive and the white flesh that is affordable but sour. Most Chinese prefer the sweetened one.

Nian gao, which literally means "year cake", is a Chinese New Year staple. It also symbolises "a steady progression", be it in one's education, career or life in general. Nian gao is also used to tempt the “heaven invigilators” so that they won’t report the bad things that one has done to the god of heaven. While it used to be wrapped in banana leaves, nian gao now comes in plastic packaging so that both the customers and shopkeepers do not have to get their hands sticky.

Sunflower seeds have a similar, auspicious meaning to melon seeds. They both imply family continuity. However, compared to melon seed that requires one to peel the shell, this is much easier to eat.

Macadamia has also joined the array of nuts eaten during the New Year celebration. The abalone flavoured ones can be read as assurance (bao) of a surplus (yu) in the year ahead.

Chinese oranges, or tangerines, have become the most popular gift during this period. They are called kam in Cantonese which also means "gold" in the same dialect. In Mandarin, they sound like ji or "lucky" and mean "gifts of good omen". The oranges are given in even numbers for good luck when visiting friends and relatives.

Raw lettuce or sheng cai imply "to grow money". It is usually eaten with braised abalone. Chinese leek or da suan, which sounds like "counting", is served by the Teochews with other dishes to make a combination symbolising auspicious abundance. Mixed with cuttlefish, or you yu in Mandarin, it means "counting continual abundance; if cooked with prawns, or har in Cantonese, it becomes "counting with laughter". The Hokkiens serve leeks during the reunion dinner. Leeks are sometimes hung for good luck during this season.

The Chinese are also very particular about fish served during this occasion. The Mandarin word for fish “yu” is a homophone for the Mandarin word “abundance”. During the reunion dinner, it is customary to serve a fish at the end of the evening meal as it is an auspicious sign for more abundance and prosperity in the New Year. Fish is also served whole, with head and tail, this signifies a whole year’s worth of prosperity, from beginning to the end.

The Northern Chinese will eat jiaozi (dumplings) for breakfast during Chinese New Year as the shape of the dumpling resembles the gold ingots used in Ancient China. Eating dumplings represents a hope for financial abundance in the coming year.

However, some foods are just not favoured during a Chinese New Year dinner. Bitter gourd, or anything known to be bitter is banned from the dining table. This is because Chinese believe that if you eat bitter foods (the Mandarin words for bitter has the same sound as the Mandarin word for suffering), your life in the coming year will be full of trials and tribulations.

Growing up in Brooklyn, New York, young Tommy Popper looks forward to the moments when, on his tiptoes to reach a ham radio in his bedroom, he can talk to his world-traveling father. Years later, Tommy is now Mr. Popper, a highly successful real estate developer in Manhattan. Amicably divorced from Amanda, with two children he sees on alternate weekends, Mr. Popper lives the life of luxury in his ultra-modern Park Avenue apartment and is well on his way to becoming partner at his prestigious firm. That is, until the morning a final gift from Popper's late father, a souvenir from Antarctica, arrives in a crate at Popper's front door.

Inside the wooden box, nestled amongst ice packs, is a two-foot tall penguin with bright orange feet. Not a toy penguin, or a stuffed bird from the taxidermist, as Popper at first assumes, but a real, live penguin, who scampers across Popper's floor and emits loud honks. Eager to be rid of this wild creature, Popper contacts every city and state agency imaginable, but no one is willing to take a pet penguin. His call to Antarctica to try to ship the bird back instead results in the arrival of another five penguins at Popper's door.

As he gets acquainted with - and increasingly attached to - his winged roommates, Popper's life quickly unravels: his swanky New York apartment is turned into a snowy winter wonderland, the deal he's long been working on is derailed, and he almost lands in jail. But thanks to his new charges, Popper comes to understand the importance of family - human and otherwise.

Forum-hopping, I have come to the conclusion that I do not know what caveat means. So I had to do a bit of googling. According to Merriam-Webster:

a : a warning enjoining one from certain acts or practices
b : an explanation to prevent misinterpretation
c : a modifying or cautionary detail to be considered when evaluating, interpreting, or doing something

Aha! So that's why I'm seeing these caveats posted across forums.

Pick Stocks Like Peter Lynch

Invest for the Long Run

Lynch has said that "absent a lot of surprises, stocks are relatively predictable over 10-20 years. As to whether they're going to be higher or lower in two or three years, you might as well flip a coin to decide." It may seem surprising to hear such words from a Wall Street legend, but it serves to highlight how fully he believed in his philosophies. He kept up his knowledge of the companies he owned, and as long as the story hadn't changed, he didn't sell. Lynch did not try to market time or predict the direction of the overall economy.

In fact, Lynch once conducted a study to determine whether market timing was an effective strategy. According to the results of the study, if an investor had invested $1,000 a year on the absolute high day of the year for 30 years from 1965-1995, that investor would have earned a compounded return of 10.6% for the 30-year period. If another investor also invests $1,000 a year every year for the same period on the lowest day of the year, this investor would earn an 11.7% compounded return over the 30-year period.

Therefore, after 30 years of the worst possible market timing, the first investor only trailed in his returns by 1.1% per year! As a result, Lynch believes that trying to predict the short-term fluctuations of the market just isn't worth the effort. If the company is strong, it will earn more and the stock will appreciate in value. By keeping it simple, Lynch allowed his focus to go to the most important task – finding great companies.

Lynch coined the term "tenbagger" to describe a stock that goes up in value ten-fold, or 1000%. These are the stocks that he was looking for when running the Magellan fund. Rule No.1 to finding a tenbagger is not selling the stock when it has gone up 40% or even 100%. Many fund managers these days look to trim or sell their winning stocks while adding to their losing positions. Peter Lynch felt that this amounted to "pulling the flowers and watering the weeds".

My Driver Is Now Investing In The Stock Market

Because of my bestselling book, My Maids Invest In The Stock Market, my Maids are now the most famous Maids in the world. (Haha!) Yes, they have been investing in the Stock Market for a year now and are doing very well.

Finally, he said, “Ayokong ako lang ang hindi millionairyo! Magiinvest rin ako! (I don’t want to be the only one who isn’t a millionaire. I’ll start investing too!)”

Each month, he now sets aside P3000 of his salary for his Stock Market investments. And for the first time in his life, he has hope. He knows that he too will be a millionaire one day.

Today, when a relative or a neighbor begs for money, and he has no more money in his pocket, he can honestly say—“Sorry pare, wala akong pera ngayon.” (So sorry, I have no money with me now.)

Obviously, no one asks him, “Diba, may pera ka sa Stock Market?” (But don’t you have money in the Stock Market?)

No one knows about it. (Shhhhh!)

Note: By doing this, he’s also teaching them not to be parasites anymore. (But that’s another topic altogether.)

I’m very happy for him.

He’s 33 years old now. If he invests P3000 in the Stock Market each month at 12% until he retires at the age of 60, he’ll retire with P7 Million.

But analysts have backtracked the Philippine Stock Market’s history. If 20 years ago, you invested in the top 5 companies, your average growth rate would have been 20% per year.

So if my driver’s investments grow at 20% per year (especially with my guidance), by the time he retires, my driver will have P37 Million.

At P3,000 a month!

If you retire poor, it’s not God’s fault.

God is giving you a choice today.

A woman was out golfing one day when she hit the ball into the woods.

She went into the woods to look for it and found a frog in a trap. The frog told her, "If you release me from this trap, I will grant you three wishes."

The woman freed the frog, and the frog said, "Thank you, but I failed to mention that there was a condition to your wishes. Whatever you wish for, your husband will get it ten times!"

The woman said, "That's okay."

For her first wish, she wanted to be the most beautiful woman in the world. The frog warned her, "You do realize that this wish will also make your husband the most handsome man in the world, an Adonis whom women will flock to". The woman replied, "That's okay, because I will be the most beautiful woman and he will have eyes only for me."

So, KAZAM - she's the most beautiful woman in the world!

For her second wish, she wanted to be the richest woman in the world. The frog said, "That will make your husband the richest man in the world. And he will be ten times richer than you." The woman said, "That's okay, because what's mine is his and what's his is mine."

There are ways to retire before 50 without winning the lottery or having valuable options to cash out. Savvy investing, smart spending and very strict saving can lay the road to find a way to live the dream.

Start your own business. If you can start a successful business, you'll have plenty of funds to retire young. One option is to sell your business and retire with the money you collect. Or you can opt to build up your business enough so that you can hire employees to run it for you.

Live below your means. Don't just earn money, save it. Be frugal. This means not buying nice things just because you can afford them or for the image they create, but because they are actually worth it. Dismiss the keeping-up-with-the-Joneses mentality.

Invest the maximum amount into company-sponsored retirement plans. Compound interest will take you a long way toward early retirement.

Work for the government. Get a government job, such as a police officer, teacher or firefighter. Most likely, you'll participate in a pension plan that will continue to pay a percent of your wages even if you retire. In most cases, these pensions kick in after 10 to 20 years of service.

Don't have children. Children are a major financial strain and could be a deciding factor on whether or not you can retire early. If you are willing to sacrifice money for the experience of raising children, be honest with yourself how many you can really afford without working into old age.

Marry someone who shares your retirement goal. Your spouse may or may not be your "better half" in helping you reach your retirement goals. Unless you can convince your spouse to continue going to the office while you garden all day, keep in mind that you'll need to save enough money so both of you can retire comfortably.

Put your money in long-term, low-risk investments like indexes and mutual funds. Don't try to beat the market. If you want to retire before your peers, you can't sacrifice your savings by betting on risky investments.

Find a way to have an urban income with a suburban cost of living. Cutting living expenses is an important savings tool. In most cases, city living is more expensive than suburban. However, the average income in a major metropolitan area is going to be more.

Don't own a car. There are many costly factors to owning a car, from gas to maintenance to insurance. Opting out of auto ownership could save you a huge amount of money over your lifetime.

Don't eat out. Consider cutting out one meal eaten outside the home a day and brown-bagging it.

Don't go on vacation. With the ridiculous cost of airline tickets these days, vacations are out of the question if you want to enjoy that endless escape at age 50. Instead of hitting the slopes of Aspen, visit grandma.

Don't pay for higher education. If you think having a higher education will up your salary in the future, find a job at a company that will not only keep you employed while you go to school, but pay for it as well.

Don't go into debt. Saving is one of the most important steps in retiring young. Avoid going into debt. It's a waste of money to continue paying a lender in interest rather than using that money to stash away for yourself in the future.

Don't smoke cigarettes or drink alcohol. Avoid spending on unnecessary items.

Die young. Let's face it. The less time you plan on living after retirement, the less money you'll have to save.

A student asks a teacher: What is love?

The teacher said: in order to answer your question, go to the paddy field and choose the biggest paddy and come back. But the rule is: you can go through them only once and cannot turn back to pick.

The student went to the field, go thru first row, he saw one big paddy, but he wonders... may be there is a bigger one later. Then he saw another bigger one... but may be there is an even bigger one waiting for him.

Later, when he finished more than half of the paddy field, he start to realize that the paddy is not as big as the previous one he saw, he know he has missed the biggest one, and he regretted. So, he ended up went back to the teacher with empty hand.

The teacher told him, this is love... you keep looking for a better one, but when later you realize, you have already miss the person.

The student asked: What is marriage then?

The teacher said: In order to answer your question, go to the corn field and choose the biggest corn and come back. But the rule is: you can go through them only once and cannot turn back to pick.

The student went to the corn field, this time he is careful not to repeat the previous mistake, when he reach the middle of the field, he has picked one medium corn that he feel satisfied, and came back to the teacher.

The teacher told him, this time you bring back a corn... you look for one that is just nice, and you have faith and believe this is the best one you get... this is marriage.
