Going off the grid: Why I chose to live life unplugged

I decided to go on hiatus! I've been off the social media grid for sometime now. No blogging, no Twitter, no Facebook. Why's that, you ask? @TimMaurer pretty much sums it up:

Less is more. I’m on a mission to simplify life, to slow it down to a pace at which it can actually be consumed, not just tasted. I don’t want to hide behind the ubiquitous, “I’m really busy” as a badge of honor. I want a lower cost of living (not just financially) and a higher quality of life. I want to limit the number of [things] that compete for my attention so that I can apply more attention to those [things] I care the most about. Less is the new more.

It may not be life-changing, but it’s certainly been enlightening.

The Mayan Calendar. Just My Two Cents.

With the recent quake, tsunami and nuke crisis engulfing Japan and the political unrest spreading through Middle East there is a massive hype circulating the world. The hype is over the supposed prophecies of the Mayan "Long Count" calendar: that on December 21, 2012 the world will end.

Well, I am almost entirely a skeptic and I urge you to stop fretting! The only way we’ll find out for sure is to wait and see. But for now, life goes on. Pray. Live. Laugh. Love.

P.S. To Japan, our thoughts and prayers are with you.

"Help me to remember, Oh Lord, that nothing would happen each day that you and I cannot handle together."

GITEX countdown: THE DAY

GITEX Technology Week starts today, 1pm - 7pm @ Dubai International Convention and Exhibition Centre.

Yesterday we bought an iPad with Wi-Fi + 3G. We've enjoyed using the wonder-tablet through the night and have not experienced any problem until this morning. iPad cannot maintain a full, steady Wi-Fi connection (dropped signals) and wouldn't reconnect to a saved network, even after a successful, initial connection to it!

There are already threads about iPad Wi-Fi connectivity issues on Google, but most didn't offer a solution. Try resetting the iPad's network settings: Settings > General > Reset > Reset Network Settings. Worked out just fine!

1 day to go before GITEX Shopper!!!

What is the difference between the Wi-Fi and Wi-Fi + 3G models?

All iPad models come with built-in Wi-Fi. The Wi-Fi model allows you to connect to available Wi-Fi networks to surf the web, check email, and more. The Wi-Fi + 3G model allows you to also access the Internet over 3G cellular networks — the same networks used by mobile phones — which is perfect when you’re not within range of a Wi-Fi network. Berry good news
7days.ae

The race is on for UAE retailers to cash in on the cancellation of the BlackBerry ban and pick up new users, following the Telecoms Regulatory Authority’s (TRA) weekend announcement.

The head of a major UAE retailer told 7DAYS that his company plans to sell the BlackBerry Torch and Pearl models at GITEX after recent Dubai launch parties of the smartphones were “postponed indefinitely” as the ban loomed. “It is going to be a GITEX launch and the timing has worked well for that... In the back of my mind I was always hoping it would be resolved,” said Ashish Panjabi, CEO of Jacky’s Electronics.

The TRA released a statement on Friday, three days before the ban deadline, that said “all Blackberry services in the UAE will continue to operate as normal and no suspension of service will occur” and that “Blackberry services are now compliant with the UAE’s telecoms regulatory framework”.

No details were given on any agreement BlackBerry maker, Research In Motion (RIM) had reached with the TRA.

Milan Sallaba, a UAE-based telecoms expert, said it is most likely the TRA has been granted access to RIM’s encryption - similar to resolutions found in other countries.

He added however, that there is also a possibility the UAE “has backed down and has said let’s continue as it was, although that is somewhat unlikely”.
