Fight for your right for safe food

Every single person on this planet has a right to eat safe and healthful food.

Our food sources are under threat from the uncontrolled entry of genetically modified organisms (GMOs) into our country’s food supply. GMOs have never been proven safe for human consumption and poses unacceptable risks to health.

In the past few months, various groups have called on the Department of Agriculture (DA), to stop field trials and environmental releases of GMOs. Yet the DA, under Secretary Proceso Alcala’s stewardship, has failed to commit to measures to ensure that GMOs will no longer be able to enter Philippine soil.

There is an urgent need for us, the public, to take a closer look at the Philippines’ regulatory process for these GMOs.

We need to go the extra mile in the fight against this invasion of our environment and eventually our food supply. We are counting on people like you to send a message to Secretary Alcala and tell him that you want safe and GMO-free food.

Send an email to DA Sec. Alcala >>

Save The Arctic. Sign now.

There is nothing like the pristine Arctic landscape, where the vast expanse of blue-tinted ice heaves and cracks. Seeing the Arctic at the top of the world is a humbling and awesome experience.

Yet because of climate change, the top of the world is melting fast, and oil giants are moving to cash in. The melting Arctic is under threat from oil drilling, industrial fishing, and conflict.

Your voice matters and your action would be instrumental in realizing our vision: declaring a global sanctuary around the North Pole, to become enforceable by international law, that will mean a ban on oil drilling and other activities that threaten the Arctic.

It's big and it's ambitious, but you can help us do it. Sign up now to help us create an Arctic sanctuary free from oil drilling.

Together we can do this. We know, because we've done it before. Twenty years ago, following a Greenpeace campaign, Antarctica was declared a World Park, off-limits to industrialization. Now let's do the same at the opposite pole.

We'll add your name and a million others to a scroll and plant it on the seabed, 4km beneath the North Pole. There it will hold firm: at the bottom of the ocean, at the top of the world. We must draw the line, and say to the polluters, "You should come no further."

You have the right to know what’s in your water

Industry’s unfettered disposal of toxic materials and byproducts into our water supply plays a huge role in the growing water crisis. In the Philippines alone, chemical pollution is quickly taking its toll on our limited supply of fresh water.

It’s a horrifying thought that every day hundreds of thousands of chemicals are being released into our rivers exposing us to these chemicals without our knowledge and consent.

You have the right to know what’s in your water.

Today we are calling on people like you to join us in raising the alarm for government action to enforce concrete and effective measures to protect water quality, beginning with a policy that will openly disclose hazardous chemical use of factories.

The public's right to know is essential to any effective public participation, good governance and sustainable business because it allows the public to know more about products, projects or activities that may adversely affect their health and environment.

Add your voice to the growing chorus of Filipinos who want clean and safe water.

Sign up for a coal-free Philippines!

Greenpeace, along with anti-coal communities from all over the Philippines are banding together to raise their opposition to coal, reassert their rights to a safe and healthy environment, and to demand that the government reverse all coal projects immediately.

Coal is the most polluting of all fossil fuels and is the worlds’ the largest single source of the greenhouse gas carbon dioxide. Burning coal also releases massive amounts of toxic substances have deadly impacts on human health and create acutely detrimental effects on developing economies and hosting communities.

All of us need to claim our rights to a healthy environment and demand that our government should protect our non-negotiable rights to a balanced and healthful place to live.

Sign up and join the growing movement for coal-free Philippines!

Support FOI!

Your support is important!

The Philippines is on the verge of passing a landmark Freedom of Information Law that could help end the culture of government secrecy and corruption. But without a surge of public support right now, we could lose this historic opportunity.

If passed, this law would prevent the government from hiding crucial information from the public. By shining a light into dark corners, experience shows it would be a highly effective tool in exposing corruption and allowing us to campaign to prevent abuses of power. This law will also facilitate infomed participation by the public in government decision-making, and more efficient access to government services.

President Aquino ran for election on a platform of anti-corruption and good governance, and endorsed the law in January this year. But now, the FOI bill languishes in the House of Representatives. Without our support and continuing demand, it will again die there.

KFC no good for rainforests!

Our actions are important.

You and I are part of a generation of people who will decide if our children will inherit what our parents passed onto us.

This is our opportunity to take action and save our Southeast Asian rainforests.

KFC is using the notorious Asia Pulp & Paper, a company shown to be destroying rainforests in Southeast Asia, for its packaging. Deforestation is driving many wild animals to the brink of extinction. Only 400 Sumatran Tigers are left in the wild and their homes are being destroyed to make fast food packaging.

KFC has no policies to tackle deforestation which is why thousands of Greenpeace supporters are taking action across the globe. Join the revolt and tell KFC to stop turning our natural heritage into trash. It is on the shoulders of our generation to decide what our legacy will be. It is us who will decide what we save and what we trash.

Can we rely on you to take action today to save our forests for tomorrow?

Story of Hope: The Agony and the Ecstasy

I was diagnosed with breast cancer 6 years ago. When you receive news like that, you have no idea how you are going to deal with it, and what follows. At the time, I was a keen amateur actress so I immersed myself in rehearsing and performing. Sometimes I would go straight from a chemotherapy session to a rehearsal. I was determined that the cancer was the enemy, and I would fight it. It had to fit around my routine, NOT the other way around.

Soon after my fifth chemo session, I performed as the Witch in "The Lion, The Witch and the Wardrobe". Luckily, I had to wear a long black wig, so my grey, thinning hair did not show!

After 6 sessions of chemo and 33 sessions of radiotherapy, things were looking up and now, 6 years later, I am just on tablets.

However, the biggest change in my life is that I have now become a professional actress, something I would not have had the nerve to do before the cancer.

I have been in 3 feature films, several TV programmes, commercials, voice overs and much more!

There is no doubt that, without having had the cancer, I would still be an amateur actress, playing to village hall audiences!!

Story of Hope: Leaping Tall Buildings in a Single Bound!

I'd like to take this time to tell you all about my hero. Is she super? Yes! Her powers are as magnificent, although less blatant than Superman's. They help her conquer the greatest obstacles and allow her to complete many missions successfully. I call her Mom, but others know her as Elizabeth Wright. 12 years ago she battled Breast Cancer and won. Being so young, who would've thought such an enemy would challenge her, but she was up to the challenge for the sake of 3 innocent children; me, my sister and my brother. What would we have done without her?

Elizabeth went undercover for a while using her powers to help others as a Nurse Practitioner. Many of her patients have caught onto her little Super Hero secret over the years, noting just how irreplaceable she is. So much good springing from one place must have caught someone's attention because Elizabeth has found herself tying on the cape again, ready to face her archenemy Breast Cancer, yet again. Not too many people have to face this evil foe twice, but that's okay. She can handle it! Her super strength gives her the courage and stamina to withstand Cancer's blows once again. Chemotherapy? Is that all you got? Elizabeth can take it. Her x-ray vision allows her to see the bright side in the smokiest of situations and this combined with her trademark shield of God make her no match for Breast Cancer! Elizabeth will beat this and continue to inspire people along the way.

She is my favorite superhero, my all-time life hero. She conquers enemies gracefully every single day and stays so positive never giving up. Life’s hurdles are no match for this super woman when she can leap tall buildings in a single bound.

Story of Hope: Be A Survivor, Not A Victim!

In the summer of 2008, was 37 years old. I had a wonderful husband, a 3 year-old son, and a new home. I also had five tumors in my right breast and positive lymph nodes. Stage 3 Breast Cancer.

By the end of 2008, I had gone through a bi-lateral mastectomy, 4 months of chemo, 7 weeks of radiation, reconstructive surgery, a post-operative infection and early menopause due to chemo. I felt like I aged 20 years. I felt ugly, worn out, and ravaged by this disease. But I was determined to be a survivor and not a victim.

I lost a lot: my breasts, my youth, my hope of having more children, and my home due to medical bills. But I gained more. I now know the value of each sunrise, and what it feels like to have your loved ones rally to support you. I know how important it is to believe in yourself. I know that cancer is an enemy that we need to fight with all the tools we have available to us, including medicine, awareness and perseverance. Most of all, I gained self-respect. I know now that I can survive anything.

I am a survivor, not a victim and I hope everyone diagnosed with Breast Cancer can someday say the same.
