Getting the Hepatitis B vaccine series

The Hepatitis B vaccine is given as a series of 3 shots over a 6-month period.

1st dose: At elected date; 2nd dose: 1 month after the 1st dose; 3rd dose: 6 months after the 1st dose.

The Hepatitis B vaccine is very effective at preventing Hepatitis B virus infection. People who reach a titre of 10 mIU/mL of anti-HBs after immunization are considered protected for life. If anti-HBs is < 10 mIU/mL, re-immunization should be conducted.

Post-immunization testing for anti-HBs should be conducted to establish antibody response and the need for re-immunization should the first course of vaccine fail to provide protection. Ideally, testing should be undertaken at least 1 month (but no later than 6 months) after the last dose of vaccine.
